Three out of four ain’t bad

The Abbotsford Heat took three of a possible four points in their home opening weekend, splitting extra time results with the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday and Saturday nights.

Six-foot four goaltender Reto Berra backed the Heat to a 3–2 decision on Friday, thanking Corban Knight for ending things 1:58 into overtime. In turn, the Admirals rode 6’5″ netminder Magnus Hellberg to a 2–1 shootout win on Saturday.

It was a familiar refrain of sorts of the Heat, who spent much of last season splitting double headers they probably should have taken outright. The Heat came out of the second intermission on a mission, breaking the zero-zero tie just 41 seconds into the third on Roman Horak’s first of the season. They carried the play for most of the period, but squandered consecutive power plays before giving up a late tying goal against the flow of play. It marked the second game in a row the Heat led going into the final six minutes of play but were unable to hold on for a regulation win.

Hockey Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur was in attendance Friday, shaking hands and signing hundreds of autographs; he is the latest in the Heat’s lineup of Hockey Legends to visit the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. The Man Who Scored The Goal That Sank Don Cherry’s Coaching Career looked great, and was great with the adoring fans who lined the stairwells for a moment with monsieur Lafleur and his blue Sharpie.

Unfortunately the Flower wasn’t enough to bring more people through the turnstyles. More than half the rink was empty for opening night, and game #2? Well, you can see for yourself:

Whitecaps Wednesday – One More Chance

Whitecaps Wednesday

I don’t think it’s much of a secret that the Whitecaps are in a dogfight to extend their season.  Yet if you were to judge the urgency of their situation on in-game performance alone, you’d have to wonder if the players’ copy of the memo ended up in the shredder.

Whitecaps FC forward Russell Teibert injected some late-game energy into the homeside, spurring them on to a 2-2 draw with the dirty, rotten, no-good, low-down Timber scoundrels from Portland. Photo by Jason Kurylo for Pucked in the Head.

Whitecaps vs RSL Game Recap

Chris’s recap of this game comes in photo form. Some viewers have suggested that it’s just him being a big poopy pants. Others argue that his take on things is somewhat irregular.

Whichever side of the bowl you sit on, we at Pucked in the Head humbly warn you that the image is completely safe for work, it’s just… well, it’s more appropriate for break time than a board meeting, let’s just say that.

Bran muffin anyone?

Hockey’s back, baby

With the Vancouver Canucks just days away from training camp, players have slowly trickled into town. As they do, they’re hitting the ice at UBC for informal team skates, like the one Pucked in the Head hit up for some photos last week.

There’s not much to report — Luongo had yet to hit YVR, and David Booth came in skating and left answering media questions about hunting. Other than that, all I have to say is hockey’s back.

To wit, after the jump I’ve got something a little more tangible from the Vancouver Giants pre-season game at Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby.

The BC Lions War Room is a Man Cave Wet Dream

The BC Lions conference room features a table painted like a CFL football field, life-sized photos of Grey Cup winners and assorted team legends, and — wait for it — actual Astroturf flooring painted like centre field. Photo by Jason Kurylo for Pucked in the Head.

Pucked in the Head had the pleasure of chatting with folks over at the BC Lions about an upcoming fundraiser today. No, I’m not letting the cat out of the bag about the event just yet, so hold your horses — but I thought I’d share with y’all just how freakin’ awesome the BC Lions War Room is. The offices moved from BC Place to the location of the Surrey Practice Facility a few years ago, and I’ve got to say I love what they’ve done with the place.

This is where Wally Buono & Co. hold their strategic meetings for football operations. The mural of the 2011 Grey Cup celebration could have been expected, I suppose, as could have the myriad photos of Lions legends. Note the head shots of guys like Lou Passaglia and Jim Young — he’s the one with the shaggy hair and bushy mustache, and just happened to be the first player I admired as a wee lad.

More after the break.

Esso Cup pic #4 – Frederique Maringer

Québec’s LHFDQ Nord won the province’s first-ever national Midget AAA title, coming from behind to beat Ontario 5-2 in the gold medal game of the 2013 Esso Cup.

Podcast: Leafs & Habs & Midgets, oh my!

Jason & Chris examine the Eastern Conference playoff picture, and somehow wind up talking about Derek Roy and the Canucks. Along the way, they utilize as many metaphors as you can shake a dead horse at. Or something.

Esso Cup pic #3 – Alyson Matteau

Representing Québec in this year’s Esso Cup, and may I add appearing in Saturday’s gold medal game at 6pm, is LHFDQ Nord. Anchoring the blueline is the tournament’s tallest player, Alyson Matteau. The native of Blainville, QC stands 5’11” before she laces up the skates. Considering female skaters at the Midget level who top 5’7″ are considered a power forward — Nord teammate Valérie Audet leads the tournament in scoring with 12 points in six games, and she’s listed at just 5’4″ — Matteau is hard to miss when she’s on the ice.

In five preliminary round games, Matteau had a goal and two assists, and has been dominant in defensive play in front of her goaltenders. (And yes, in case you’re wondering, mademoiselle Matteau’s father just happens to be named Stéphane, and yes, he’s that Stephane Matteau, the one with the Stanley Cup ring.)

Esso Cup pic #2 – Hailey Smyl

In British Columbia, there aren’t many hockey names more recognizable than that of Smyl. Stan ‘the Steamer’ won back to back Memorial Cups with the New Westminster Bruins before settling into a 13-year career that defined Vancouver Canucks hockey for a generation. His brother Harvey Smyl may not have had quite as much impact on the ice, but has become one of the top junior coaches in the game, and still helms the BCHL Junior A Chilliwack Chiefs.

So it should come as no surprise that Hailey Smyl, daughter to Harvey and niece to Stan — a hard-working, emotional player who leads by example — finds herself wearing the captain’s C for the Fraser Valley Phantom, one of the region’s top midget teams.

Esso Cup pic #1

We at Pucked in the Head have long flicked nose candy at lamestream media pundits and “personalities” who seem to think they should be above reporting anything less than the very highest level of sport. These are the Vancouver hockey writers who huff and puff when asked to cover hockey that doesn’t involve teams named ‘Canucks’. These are the radio pundits who whinge and rant when (rightly) informed that their job is, in fact, to report on all sporting events that happen in the area, not just the ones with the most impressive pre-game meals.

What these small-minded folk don’t realize is that the biggest and best in the country, like Bob McKenzie, Ron MacLean and Jeff Marek, for instance, still follow the ranks of minor pro, college, junior, and — gasp — even women’s hockey. The Esso Cup features the best young female hockey players in Canada, and the 2013 tourney is being held in Burnaby, BC this week. Look for pics and a feature or two over the next few days, and let’s hope certain local sports talk blowhards get over themselves long enough to give the tournament some love as well. These young ladies are the next Wickenheisers, the next Pounders, the next Spooners. They’re the next generation of Olympic Gold Medallists and World Champions. They work hard out there on the ice, and gosh darn it they deserve the attention.

And hey, while we’re spotlighting pictures of women in sport — Ms Anderson above, and yesterday’s post about tennis phenom Eugenie Bouchard — let’s give a gander at Abbotsford Heat ice crew member Chyna, who let loose with a wicked slap shot during a post-game shootaround at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre last month. I swear to Gaustad, she put this one-timer top cheese, off the far post and in. Badass.
