Vancouver Canucks Practice Photo Gallery

I was at a Vancouver Canucks practice earlier this week, and got a few good shots I’d like to share.

But first, why not support some other teams around town this weekend? (Well, any weekend, really,  but I’m posting this on January 11, 2013.)

Friday, January 11:
• The Abbotsford Heat host the Canucks farm team, the Chicago Wolves, tonight at the AESC. At last check, a few tickets were still available.
• The UBC Lady Thunderbirds host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at Thunderbird Arena (the very place the Canucks have been skating throughout the clusterbleep lockout.)

Saturday January 12:
• The Vancouver Giants host the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday, January 12 at the Pacific Coliseum.
• The Lady Thunderbirds go against the Pronghorns for the back half of their weekend double-header.
• The Heat host the Wolves again in Abbotsford, but that game is sold out.

Cory Schneider, world traveller

Cory Schneider was exhausted yesterday morning. He came off the ice at UBC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena, leaned against the wall, and said so. “Wow,” he exhaled, “I’m exhausted.”

He didn’t look tired at all. He looked pretty fresh, actually, considering his commute to practice was upwards of 20 hours long. With a tentative agreement between the NHL and NHLPA still fresh news, Schneider had ended his brief stint in the Swiss Elite League, spent a calendar day in airports and commercial jets, hopped to the gym for a workout, then participated in a practice in full goalie gear with his Canucks teammates. Hell, I’m winded after writing that paragraph.

But as tired as he professed to be, Schneider looked good. And he gamely answered questions for reporters — some of those questions several times — for nearly 30 minutes before they allowed him to hit the showers. There were the obligatory queries about the Roberto Luongo saga. He was asked about the lockout, the potential end to it, and his thoughts on fan revolt. And he took questions on the Swiss League, European travel and Italian food.

One TV reporter asked him if he’ll soon be taking over the @strombone1 Twitter account.

Is this man happy? Jason Garrison edition

Jason Garrison is happy to be skating with his new teammates. Or at least he looks like he is. The man wore a permagrin through Tuesday’s practice at Thunderbird Arena, even when getting slapped with a stick across the ribs during puck protection drills courtesy of Andrew Alberts.

Garrison, of course, signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks on Canada Day of 2012. (That’s July 1 for our non-Great White Northern readers.) The White Rock native had a career highs of 16 goals and 33 points in 77 games for the Florida Panthers last year, and added three more points in four games during a first-round playoff loss to the Stanley Cup finalist New Jersey Devils.

Canucks Minor Hockey Weekend: Vancouver Angels vs Richmond Ravens

The Vancouver Canucks Minor Hockey Weekend, which featured 24 minor hockey teams from across BC skating on Rogers Arena ice, concluded with a resounding call of “LET THE GIRLS PLAY!” Okay, it wasn’t the first female hockey game of the event, but with the leaps forward the women’s game has made over the past few years, it seemed fitting that the Vancouver Angels and Richmond Ravens Atom teams would face off to the final puck drop on Sunday afternoon.

These 9- and 10-year-old ladies played to a 1-1 draw, even tying the shootout before shaking hands and heading off the ice for tours of the Canucks dressing room and the chance to grill their own coaches in the media room. (Loads of pictures after the jump.)

Canucks Minor Hockey Weekend: Semiahmoo vs Squamish

With the lockout inexplicably extending into the Christmas season, it’s hard to for even the most ardent hockey fan to support their local NHL club. The fact is, however, that ownership represents a very, very small fraction of the personnel behind the logo — there are hundreds of incredibly decent human beings who work for each club, and they’re faced with the daunting task of trying to keep good will alive within the communities they serve.

Enter the Vancouver Canucks Minor Hockey Weekend, where 24 teams were invited to skate on Rogers Arena ice. Teams were randomly selected from over 1200 entries from across the province of British Columbia. (Loads of pictures after the jump.)

It’s a beautiful day in the neighbourhood

It’s a beautiful day in the neighbourhood.

Things are looking up for the Canucks. Oh, I know what you’re thinking:

But but but but BUT they’ll miss Sami Salo’s calming influence on the blueline, and after another off-season surgery the jury’s still out on whether Ryan Kesler will ever reassume his role as a dominant two-way player, and Mike Gillis is shopping the heck out of future Hall of Fame goaltender Roberto Luongo so who knows what we’ll actually see out of that deal, and Zack Kassian is still a long ways from proving he can replace the offensive upside of Cody Hodgson, and we still haven’t answered the departure of Christian Ehrhoff LAST off-season, and it’s unknown whether Daniel Sedin has truly recovered from the concussion that so demolished the squad’s confidence going into the playoffs, and the city of Vancouver is still chock full of fair-weather “fans” who take more pride in slamming the home team than in supporting them through the mini-slumps that have occasionally blotted an otherwise remarkable record the past couple of seasons! Pens force a game 6

Before I say anything else, the pic of the Flyers bench below was stolen unceremoniously from the Puck Doctors. You oughtta surf their site, yo.

The big, bad Flyers have lost two straight games to... THESE GUYS?!?!?!

All right. The Pittsburgh Penguins have dodged two bullets now, coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the first round to force a game six. Game four was a laugher – Philly wasn’t even in the building, and the Pens had something to prove. They scored at will, putting five pucks past each of the Flyer goalies for a 10-3 win.

Canucks discussion, part 372

Jason: I’ll be very disappointed if the Canucks can’t gut out game four, at least.

Chris: If they lose, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Craig MacTavish coaching next year.

Jason: If he can get Kesler to play to his potential, bring him on. I’m far more disappointed in Kes than I am in AV. I mean, is he still hurt? If so, he was selfish not to sit longer at the start of the year. Is he pissed at V? Then he’s being an unprofessional baby.

A royal pain in the arse – Kings go up 2-0

Vancouver Canucks Australia came up with some great playoff banners!

Final exam at UBC tomorrow, otherwise I’d write up the wheat thresher that is the LA Kings special team attack.

Just two observations:
1) Both games at Rogers Arena featured massive defensive zone giveaways by Alex Edler that wound up giving the Kings a goal. Something’s wrong with this kid. Injury? Relationship trouble? Lupus?
2) Roberto Luongo is just about the only guy in blue who cannot be blamed one whit for Vancouver being down two-bagel. (Anyone who tries to blame him either hasn’t watched the games, doesn’t know a thing about hockey, or both.)
