Episode 48 – What Lockout?

Chris wears a shirt that is destined for ugly jersey greatness, offers to help cheer your opponents into oblivion, and makes an inappropriate comment about his ancestors. Jason is his usual smug, snickering self, but he scores a few points for adding some of Bruno Mars “Locked Out of Heaven” into the opening of the podcast.

Vancouver anything but giant on the power play

After 12 games, the Vancouver Giants are off to what you might call a rough start. At 3-9, the team sits in the cellar of the Western Hockey League standings, and has the league’s second-worst goals for total. Goaltending has troubled the G-men, certainly, with third-year player Liam Liston already doing his best Dan Cloutier impression to earn a spot on the bench behind a couple of 16-year-olds. But it’s another set of stats that is probably to blame for Vancouver’s slow start: special teams.

Rogers Arena, BC Place and the Canucks’ Culture Conundrum

On Saturday, I took advantage of a pretty rare opportunity: I got to see Vancouver play Montreal in two different sports on the same day. After an off-season that stretched seemingly forever, the Vancouver Whitecaps finally got to show off their revamped squad against the Montreal Impact at 3pm. Then, at 7pm, the Habs made their only visit of the year to Rogers Arena. I’ve been to my share of Canucks games in the past, and I was at all but one Whitecaps home game last season, but I’ve never been able to so directly compare the atmosphere in the two stadiums.

It couldn’t have worked out better, frankly. The Habs always inspire one of the liveliest affairs (off the ice) you’re likely to see at Rogers Arena, while the home opener in any sport is usually a noisy one. I even got to take in the games from a similar vantage point in each stadium. So how do the two events stack up? Read on to find out. Habs 4, Canucks 1 – say it ain’t so!

Somehow, these two manage to make things work. Photo by Jason Kurylo

The Montreal Canadiens haven’t had much luck against the Vancouver Canucks of late. Wait, let me rephrase that. The Habs haven’t had much luck of late. They sit dead last in the Eastern Conference – keeping the spot warm for the Ottawa Senators, whom everyone picked to be the Northeast bottom feeder this year, I guess – and they’ve been bitten by just about every bug you can think of: injury, illness, concussion, personal slumps, off years, a woeful power play, coaching controversies… When they do get a bounce their way this season, the skater in the right place at the right time fans on the puck or hits the post. If they don’t manage to catch the equally awful New York Islanders, this will be the first year the Habs finish last in the conference since 1939-40.

Pucked in the Head 44: Top 7 Rivalries of All Time, Part 1

No matter which team you like best, there’s a special feeling that precedes a big matchup against their biggest rival. This year, people around the hockey world stopped to watch the Vancouver Canucks battle the Boston Bruins in a one-game rematch of last year’s injury-filled Stanley Cup final. But as much as the Bs and Canucks hate each other, they’ve got nothing on these: the Top Seven Team Rivalries in Sporting History – part one. (Note: there may not be overt hockey content in this episode, but we use the great sport on ice as comparison approximately 3,657.29 times during this podcast.)

Episode 40 – Top 7 Canuck Nicknames of All Time, Part II

When David Booth came to town, we fans of sports nicknames rejoiced. Surely a 20-something fledgling scorer with that name coming to a team that plays in a stadium named for a telecommunications company would have a clever pseudonym. Think of it: David “The Operator” Booth. David “Long Distance” Booth. Hell, even something that displays lateral thinking – call him “Clark Kent” after the old days, when Superman changed clothes in a phone booth.

But no, the stupid Florida Panthers called him stupid “Bootsy”.  And stupid Kevin Bieksa calls him stupid “Grizz”, just because stupid David Booth hunts big, stupid game in the stupid off-season. Continue reading Episode 40 – Top 7 Canuck Nicknames of All Time, Part II

Episode 27 – The Hockey Song

In our latest foray into the wonderful world of hockey-themed tuneage, Jason and Jamie dissect the famousest (yes) hockey ditty of all: The Hockey Song by Stompin’ Tom Connors. Want a new drinking game? Take a sip whenever Jamie says “Golden Mean of Songwriting” during this episode of Pucked in the Head.

  • Jamie sings Stompin’ Tom.
  • Jason holds his head in his hands.
  • Comments from the Peanut Gallery.

  • Oh crap, there’s more.

Note: Jason in fact does know that Jellyfish is a band from San Francisco, California, not a British power pop trio. He also knows Etobicoke is a suburb of Toronto, Ontario, and not a remote northern mining town. It’s called sarcasm, people.

Guitarist for Vancouver-based rock band The Orchid Highway, ‘Jamie’ is a grizzled veteran of many tours across Canada, the US, and the UK. (They took their sticks on tour for the shinny games!) A fan of the game, he began cheering for Swedes back in the WHA Winnipeg Jets days, and was overjoyed when Vancouver drafted the Sedins 2nd and 3rd overall. An opinionated bastard, Jamie always has something to say.
